Run a cohort

Once a cohort is launched, its page becomes your class monitor: who has arrived, where each person is, which checks pass, who is asking for help. This page covers every action available during the class and after it.

Before you start, you need a launched cohort (see Create a cohort). Open Train, then Cohorts: the cohort is listed under Live now.

During the class, the Live indicator means the table updates on its own (Reconnecting… if the connection drops). Each row is one trainee.

Column What it shows
Trainee Their name and email, or their help request if their hand is up.
Status Enrolled, In lab or Finished. Not started: they have not opened their environment yet.
Environment Their environment’s state. A warning icon and “Stopped: …” flag an environment that failed or went away.
Progress The step of the sequence they are on, e.g. “Step 2 of 4”.
Type The kind of scenario in progress: tutorial, challenge, playground.
Earlier steps The score earned on each step they have already left.
Checks The checks passed on the current step.
Current task The task they are working on.

Some columns are hidden on small screens. The actions always stay visible on the right.

The class does not move in lockstep: each trainee moves through the sequence individually.

  1. To move a trainee to the next scenario, click Advance on their row. The button disappears once they are on the last step.

  2. To send them to any step, forward or back, click the arrow to the left of their name. The Their run through the class panel lists every step.

  3. On the step you want, click Move here. “Moved to step …” confirms the move.

Leaving a step does not destroy the lab: it is paused with the trainee’s work on it, and the step shows kept. Moving the trainee back to that step restarts that same environment, as they left it. Their score on the step they leave is recorded at the moment they leave.

In the Their run through the class panel, the current step offers three actions:

Action Effect
Join Opens a terminal in the trainee’s environment (see below).
Restart Replaces the current step’s environment with a fresh one, on the same step. With no environment, it creates one.
Stop Stops this environment and leaves it stopped, without touching the rest of the class.

When an environment has failed or gone away, a Recreate the environment icon also appears directly on the trainee’s row.

  1. On the trainee’s row, or on their current step, click Join.

  2. The …’s environment window opens with a terminal in their lab. You work in it just as they do.

The trainee is told so in their own lab, and the connection is recorded. You get the terminal, never the passwords of their app views. Join is only offered during the class, once the trainee has started their environment, and only to the instructor running the cohort.

During the class, a trainee can click Ask for help in their lab and, if they want, describe what has them stuck.

  1. The roster header shows “… waiting”, and a hand appears under the trainee’s name with their message or the step concerned.

  2. Go and help: beside them, or with Join.

  3. Click Mark as handled. The hand disappears from their row.

The trainee can also withdraw the request themselves. Raised hands are addressed to you alone: for a broken environment you cannot fix, open a support ticket instead.

The Their run through the class panel shows a trainee’s whole run, during and after the class:

  • the current step shows its checks live;
  • each finished step shows its recorded score, and its list of checks expands;
  • a step not reached yet is marked not reached.

Only challenges are scored: tutorials and playgrounds produce no score.

The cohort’s materials stay editable during and after the class, without touching the original track.

  1. In the cohort’s Materials card, click Edit.

  2. In Session materials, click Add a material, choose the Type, enter the Title and the Link.

  3. Click Save. Participants find the materials in their training, even after it ends.

  1. Click End session at the top of the page.

  2. Confirm. The class closes for everyone on the roster and their environments are stopped.

In a subscription organization, the credits charged at launch are not refunded: ending early costs the same as running to the end.

Once the cohort has finished, its page shows two more cards:

  • Results: each participant’s score, step by step, and their total. They stay available after the session ends.
  • What the class said: the average rating out of 5, the number of replies out of the roster size, the spread of ratings and the comments. Participants can give feedback while the class runs and after it has finished, and change it later.
