Webcam and camera permissions
The invitation may show under Webcam that it is Required or Optional. This is information to read: follow the recruiter’s instructions. For what proctoring means for you, see Assessment mode.
If the recruiter asks you to use a video tool
Section titled “If the recruiter asks you to use a video tool”The sections below only apply in that case. Camera access is controlled by your browser and your operating system, not by Klastro: check both for your video-call tool.
The browser blocks the camera
Section titled “The browser blocks the camera”Symptom. The camera does not work on the video-call site, the address bar shows a crossed-out camera icon, or the browser never asks for permission.
Cause. You previously refused camera access for this site, or the browser’s default setting blocks cameras.
Fix. Allow the camera for the video-call site in your browser, then reload the page.
- On the video-call site, select the icon to the left of the address in the address bar (View site information).
- Set Camera to Allow. If you do not see it, select Site settings and set Camera to Allow there.
- Reload the page.
To check the global setting, open chrome://settings/content/camera: the video-call site must not be listed under the sites not allowed to use your camera.
- On the video-call site, select the permissions icon to the left of the address in the address bar.
- Next to the camera permission marked Blocked (or Blocked Temporarily), select the × to clear it.
- Reload the page and accept the camera request when Firefox asks.
To check the global setting, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Camera > Settings… and make sure the video-call site is not set to Block.
- With the video-call site open, choose Safari > Settings… in the menu bar (or Settings for the video-call site…).
- Open the Websites tab, then Camera in the sidebar.
- Set the video-call site to Allow (or Ask).
- Reload the page.
- On the video-call site, select the lock icon to the left of the address in the address bar.
- Select Permissions for this site and set Camera to Allow.
- Reload the page.
To check the global setting, open edge://settings/content/camera.
The operating system blocks the camera
Section titled “The operating system blocks the camera”Symptom. The browser allows the camera but no image comes through, or the browser says the camera is unavailable.
Cause. The operating system does not let your browser use the camera.
Fix.
- macOS: open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on your browser. Quit and reopen the browser afterwards.
- Windows 11: open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera and Let desktop apps access your camera.
Another application is using the camera
Section titled “Another application is using the camera”Symptom. The camera is allowed everywhere but still does not start, or shows a black image.
Cause. Another application (a video-call tool, another browser tab) is holding the camera. Some computers only let one application use it at a time.
Fix. Close video-call applications and other tabs that use the camera, then reload the video-call site. On a laptop with a physical camera cover or a camera key, make sure the camera is enabled.
A company-managed computer
Section titled “A company-managed computer”Symptom. The camera settings are greyed out or reset themselves.
Cause. Your organization’s IT policy controls camera access.
Fix. Use a personal computer for the assessment, or ask your IT team to allow the camera for the video-call site.
Still not working
Section titled “Still not working”If the recruiter asks for video and you cannot make it work, contact them before starting. If a problem appears during the assessment, select Report a problem in the lab’s top bar; see Report a problem from a lab.
