Take notes during a lab
The Notes tab is a plain-text scratchpad inside the lab. Use it to keep commands that worked, values you will need again, or your reasoning as you go.
Before you start: notes are available in tutorials, challenges and assessments. A playground has no Notes tab.
Write notes
Section titled “Write notes”-
In the left pane, click the Notes tab, next to Instructions.
-
Type or paste anything you like. The notepad is plain text in a monospaced font, so commands pasted from the terminal keep their exact spacing.
-
Watch the indicator at the top right of the pane:
Indicator Meaning Autosaved Nothing new to save Unsaved changes… You are typing; it saves when you pause Saving… Your notes are being saved Saved Your latest text is stored Not saved — retrying on next edit The last save failed -
Click Instructions to go back to your tasks. Your notes, and any text not yet saved, stay in place while you switch.
Notes save about a second after you stop typing, and immediately when you click outside the notepad.
Where notes are kept
Section titled “Where notes are kept”| Lab | Your notes belong to |
|---|---|
| A tutorial or challenge you started yourself | That one lab. Opening the same lab again later shows them; a new lab starts with an empty notepad. |
| An assessment | The whole assessment. The same notepad follows you through every scenario of it. |
Notes are stored with your account, not in the lab environment, so they are not affected by anything you do in the terminal. A notepad holds up to 256 KB of text.
Who can read your notes
Section titled “Who can read your notes”| Lab | Who can read them |
|---|---|
| A tutorial or challenge you started yourself | Only you |
| An assessment | You, and the recruiter who reviews your assessment: your notes appear in your candidate report |
